hello miss jennifer and nathananiel. we are setting aside tomorrow (monday; 5/4 and tuesday 5/5 to launch our full court press "plarn day". we have been collecting bags and strategizing as to best technique--geez the kids are competitive! we notice our fingers get a "gooey" feeling after a bit. one thing we noticed is how focused we have to be . . . very quiet in the classroom. we have been listening to music as we plarn. thanks for the opportunity.

Welcome to the project Shady Grove Elementary!
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear that the 3rd through 5th grade students are so involved. Please let us know if you have your own display, as we would love to come and see it. It would be like Christo and Jeanne Claude's Umbrellas with similar installations in two different locations. Look for pictures around the 18th of May.
Plarn on!

Hello Jennifer and Nathaniel,
Here is the sum product of our efforts. We were disappointed we couldn’t plarn more, but we ran outta bags! We noted how the plastic bags are everywhere you don’t want them, but not handy when we need ‘em. Bags were in short supply despite our pleas to family and coworkers. We were willing in spirit but lacking in materials. We imagined plarning a truckload with the bags we had, but alas a small box is what we wound up with. Interesting experience. We also went to a website and watched the number of bags being consumed by the second worldwide –very impressive in a scary way. I’m sure the students—myself included—will never look at a plastic bag in quite the same way. Thanks again for letting us in on the project.
Mr. Casey and 6th grade plarning crew
ps. The Pirates of the Carribean soundtrack was the background work music of choice--our school band's favorite.
Jennifer and Nathaniel-
ReplyDelete100 plarn balls (using 598 bags) will be headed to NY tomorrow!!
I took some pictures...how do you post them???
D. Hawkins :)
Mr Casey and 6th Grade Plarners of West Point,
ReplyDeleteYour efforts are to be commended! Nathaniel and I are glad that you were able to learn about this particular side effect of consumerism that results in a great cost to our environment. We will proudly display the plarn you have made. Please remember to stay tuned for a part 2 of the project.
Nathaniel and I will also have to try plarning to the Pirates of Carribean soundtrack. It sounds like an adventure.
All the best and check back soon!
Nat and Jen
